Transforming Curiosity into Action through Soil Health and Composting
In the vibrant halls of GHPS Srirampura, a spirit of curiosity and environmental consciousness flourished among the students, guided by their dedicated mentors and the visionary leadership of Headmaster Mr. Shivaramu. Through the Veggie4School programme, these young minds embarked on a transformative journey of discovery, exploring the intricate relationship between soil health, composting, and sustainable living.
Meet the Soil Guardians: Gagan S, Karthik, Nithesh, and Mallikarjuna, among others, eager to delve into the wonders of soil and composting. With enthusiasm and determination, the Soil Guardians embarked on a journey of exploration and learning:
They delved into the intricacies of different soil types, learning about their advantages and disadvantages, and the impact of components like sand, silt, and clay on plant growth. Through hands-on activities like the Jar Shaking Test, they witnessed firsthand the different layers within the soil, gaining insight into its composition and structure. The importance of composting was emphasized, highlighting its role in plant nutrition and waste reduction. Practically, they learned how to compost using a bin and various wet and dry waste materials, promoting environmental sustainability within their community. In a fun and engaging fruity exploration workshop, the Soil Guardians discovered the significance of healthy eating, exploring fruits as sources of essential minerals and vitamins. They participated in a fruit layering activity, drawing parallels between the layers of soil and the layers of a fruit parfait, fostering a deeper understanding of soil composition and nutrition. As the chapter progressed, the Soil Guardians reflected on their journey:
